Drama
At Lyneham Primary School, we are incredibly lucky to be able to offer specialist Drama lessons to our children as part of our Enrichment Curriculum. These Drama lessons are taught by Miss Phillips, who has over 17 years of experience in the performing arts and musical theatre industry – both as a teacher and a professional performer.
Drama at Lyneham Primary School links directly with our Literacy curriculum, focusing primarily on developing children’s oracy skills including speaking and listening, and encouraging children to understand and express points of view. Drama lessons are engaging, fun and motivating, therefore making learning both enjoyable and memorable. Drama offers children an outlet to express their emotions, develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in a supportive environment, developing and guiding their own learning.
Within our drama lessons, children get to explore stories and events through a dramatic lens by focusing on seven different elements: role & character, relationships, situation, voice, movement, dramatic action, and the use of language. In addition to this, our other central focuses include developing children’s self-awareness, self-esteem, confidence, and bodily proprioception, and understanding the importance of public speaking, listening, teamwork and cooperation. We explore ideas such as spacing, rhythm, hand-eye co-ordination and balance, how to use our bodies and voices, as well as specific performance skills and techniques that develop across the school years. Their increasing knowledge and understanding of how the elements of drama work enables children to effectively shape, express and share their ideas, feelings and responses, making use of language, space, symbol, allegory and metaphor.
